SHQ BV80 Scammell Pioneer R100 Heavy Wrecker

Hello There! Another additon to the tank recovery game project is this Scammell wrecker. It is originall an artillery tractor but the model comes with the option of a gantry and canopy to fit.

The chipping can be done in many ways but here I painted the chips on with a fine brush.

The windscreen is a scap piece of acetate packaging from a screen in a plastic package. It is cut to size with a sharp scalpel and glued in place with PVA.

The coarse vegitations is bristles from a coconut hair brush and the finer plants are the method I described in the post on the British Napoleonic foot artillery, here,

The original gantry from the model was very small and did not allow me to thread any chains through it. I wanted to model some representation of a block and tackle so had to make a new gantry from plasicard parts then use chain from my bits box.

Here is a better view of the gantry. I am now working on a German tank transporter for the DAK for the same project.

Airfix Scammel Tank Transporter

Hello There. It is now the New Year and I hope you all had a nice holiday. Unfortunately we are now in another lockdown which this time has a very uncertain ending. With the pandemic now out of control in this country we are now back to our homes and finding ways of  keeping ourselves occupied.

I have started doing some 'extra' shifts at the hospital I work at, so posting on here maybe a little more random and infrequent but I do have a number of painting jobs coming to fruition which will appear on this blog.

First is an example of the Airfix Scammel tank transporter painted in desert colours. It is intended for use in the desert tank recovery game I have been working on for a while.

The models are glued to a 0.8mm plywood base which has magnabase underneath. Each wheel has a piece of coffee stirrer under it so the wheels do not appear to be sinking into the sand. The base then has a layer of tile adhesive with PVA, stones, gravel and sand. A paint, wash and dry brush and we are all done.

Construction: SHQ Scammell Artillery Tow

Hello There! Here is another construction post. This is similar to the last one but is the SHQ version of the Scammell Artillery Tow.

The body of the vehicle is in one piece and was cleaned up primed and painted Vallejo 976 buff. The rear axles were fitted and checked for squareness.

Construction: Airfix Scammell Tank Transporter

Hello There! Here is the next in the series of construction posts. I have a boxed model of this and another which has been made but not painted. I thought that I could use the one that had been made as a profile for the one I could make which would solve any problems that I may have making it and then I would have two transporters done.

After some scrabbling around looking for the missing wheels on the ready made model I then started on the boxed one.

The cab went together very easily, great considering it is a 40+ year old plastic cast! I then painted the interior with white enamel and then Vallejo 976 buff.

At the same time the driver was mounted on a piece of brass wire and painted.

The front axle was fitted next and as it was going to used as a wargaming model I packed the joint with milliput. I used a set square to ensure it looked right on the model to find later that I had fitted the axel the wrong way round, (ie back to front), so the locating holes for the steering beam could not be put in place  but it was also slightly out of alignment. Both can easily be dealt with. The model will be on a base, so a rock can be put under one tyre, making it look right, (I like to make the models interact with their surroundings so this will make it look like it is driving over a rock and will work well), and I can adjust the steering beam and just trim the locating studs.
